The Committee, DG Jackie and 1st VDG Charley

Lions Kristie and Joan prepare the Membership Table

Thank you Ln Charley for use of the banner.
Last to arrive, first to win

Thank you Kings County Hospital
On Saturday December 17, 1016, Brooklyn had the first snow for the season and Brooklyn Kings County and Winthrop Lions’ Clubs held a Health Expo at the Brooklyn Public Library Flatbush Branch at 22 Linden Blvd from 11am-3pm.  It started off slow due to the weather but by the end of the event approximately 100 people passed through.

Besides Club members from Brooklyn Kings County and Winthrop Lions Clubs, there were representatives from Kings County Hospital Outreach who did hypertensive testing, representatives from the Fire Department, Representatives from Tots and Teens in Focus, TEAL, the District 20K1 Breast Cancer and Diabetes Committees, a podiatrist from NY Methodist Hospital, information about various other diseases and dental kits.  Walgreens donated the toys that Tots and Teens in Focus distributed to the children in attendance.  The Clubs were very happy to see so much children in attendance since they were curious about the diseases that affect our community.  Kings County Hospital ensured that all the Lions present tested their pressure.  Kings County Hospital staffers sent one client to urgent care due to the reading they took that day.  We also fed the vendors and visitors breakfast, lunch and snacks.  A few vendors and visitors expressed interest in joining Lionism.

There were many Lions in attendance including DG Jackie and 1st VDG Charley. This event was the brainchild of Lion Agard (Kings County) and Lion President Fraser (Winthrop).   We have to give a special mention to  Ln Wallace (Kings County) who donated the breakfast and drinks as well as arranging Kings County Hospital OutreachWe hope to do more health expos in the future.

Happy Birthday Lion Cecelia L!!!!

LCIF and Lions are Making the World a Better Place

LCIFheader.gif
Dear Lions,Nairobi-RM.jpg

We have seen many amazing advancements throughout our lives. We have walked on the moon, we have phones that guide us when we are lost and we have robots that perform intricate surgeries. Yet, we still see hundreds of children die every single day from a vaccine-preventable disease.

Measles is a highly contagious disease. Those that survive are often left with serious complications, including brain damage, hearing loss and blindness. Too many children are lost to a disease that we can prevent. For about US$1, a simple vaccine provides immunity against measles. That is why we Lions committed to raising US$30 million for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, by 2017. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) will match our contributions, for a total of up to US$60 million mobilized for the fight against measles.

Over the next year, we will need to raise approximately US$10 million to fulfill our promise to the world’s children. I am asking each and every Lion to renew your dedication to the fight against this deadly disease. Together, we have vaccinated millions of children. But the work is not done and we cannot rest until it is. Please make a donation today to LCIF’s measles fund so that no more families have to endure the heartbreaking loss of a child to measles.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada
Chairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation
Lions Quest Proven Effective for Drug Prevention
LQMontenegro.pngLions Quest recently concluded a pilot program in Serbia, Macedonia (FYROM) and Montenegro. The results from that pilot show that Lions Quest was significantly effective in preventing the use of marijuana, alcohol and tobacco among youth. These results were presented at the European Union Society for Prevention Research, which helps to position LCIF and Lions Quest as thought leaders in the social-emotional learning field. Watch this video to see how Lions Quest has impacted students and teachers in Montenegro.
Guatemala has Eliminated River BlindnessGuatemala.png
Guatemala’s minister of health recently announced that the World Health Organization (WHO) has officially verified the elimination of onchocerciasis from Guatemala. Guatemala is now the fourth country in the Americas to be verified free of this disease, after Colombia (2013), Ecuador (2014), and Mexico (2015). LCIF congratulates the people and government of Guatemala, The Carter Center’s Onchocerciasis Elimination Program for the Americas (OEPA), and many devoted Lions on this monumental achievement!

BKCLC at the 2016 Brooklyn Marathon!!!

Lions O. Brathwaithe, M. Cephas, Y. Gomez and K. White volunteered at the 2016 NYC Marathon on November 6, 2016. Our shifts started at 6am and finished at around 2pm.  This year we received a tote bag and a commemorative pin as a thank you gift for volunteering.  Unfortunately Lion Joan could not attend at the last moment but you can see her credentials in the picture above.

It was a hard shift, some volunteers left early but the Lions from District 20K1 did an excellent job. Thank you Lion C. McBride for the banners. Thank you to the District for breakfast. Thank you Hollis Lions Club for maintaining the fluid station over the last twenty years.

I hope next year when we discuss the marathon the entire station will be run by District 20K1 Lions.

BKCLC Thanksgiving 2016 Baskets!!!

Packing the 19 Baskets for Thanksgiving 2016
On Monday November 21, 2016 a few Lions went to Lion President's home to pack the baskets for Thanksgiving.  Lion President, Lions K. Fraser, B. Slythe, J. Holder, J. Agard, K. White, Y. Gomez. G. Walton, F. Campbell spend a good part of the day prepping and packing the baskets.  This year we packed 19 baskets to feed a total of 73 people 40 adults and 33 children,  While a large portion of the meat and staples were donated the club spent $230.10 to purchase onions, potatoes, flour and can vegetables.   Lion President's daughter Rochelle (non-Lion) donated the pies for the basket.  Each basket had turkey/chicken and ham, Sparkling cider and a pie as well as the macaroni cheese, cranberry sauce and gravy.  Each basket included enough staples such as rice, sugar, potatoes , flour, oil to feed each family for at least a week after thanksgiving.  We will thank the elected official for the turkey donation separately.  BKCLC helped 19 families, thank you BKCLC.  Hopefully we can help more families next year.
